Hey lovely people,
I hope you’re all doing okay.
This month, I’ve done something a little bit crazy – I’ve signed up to walk 10 miles for Tenovus Cancer Care in the middle of the night! Last time I did a walk like this was in 2013 when I did the Shine Walk around London for Cancer Research UK so I think I should be okay, especially as Cardiff is so familiar to me!
The money raised from the walk this year will support Tenovus’ Mobile Support Units – the units bring treatment closer to patients’ homes so they don’t have to spend hours travelling back and fore to hospital. They’re based in Cardiff, Cwmbran and Swansea & they’re easy to find with parking facilities – the Swansea unit even offers a weekend service so that appointments can be fitted in around work.
When I was receiving treatment, I was lucky enough to live only 30 minutes from the hospital – a shorter distance than the 10 miles I’ll be walking – but other people on the ward had travelled for hours from all over Wales! The motion sickness from travelling doesn’t always go well with the nausea from chemotherapy and it can sometimes be an uncomfortable ride after surgery – I remember being in so much pain whilst travelling after the surgery on my leg!
The Mobile Units do a great job of reducing those tiring journeys for patients and their families as well as freeing up valuable time that can be spent with loved ones. Not only that but it’s expensive to travel back and fore to the hospital, especially when you’ve had to give up work because of your illness. The shorter journey to the Mobile Units means that patients can save a few pounds which can be spent on bills & essentials, or even a treat!
So, the actual walk.
The theme is constellations and you can choose between the Big Dipper which is 10 miles or the Little Dipper which is 5. I obviously went all out and chose the Big Dipper – eek! My best friend has agreed to walk with me (bless her heart!) which will make it ten times easier because I’ll have her to chat to all the way around 🙂
As we are going to be walking in the dark, we’re going to dress in some crazy neon clothes & potentially take some glo-sticks with us! The walk itself starts at 10pm but we’re going to get to the Cardiff City Stadium a little bit earlier to see all of the entertainment that is on offer & of course, I’ll be vlogging the whole thing for you guys!
If you’re thinking of signing up to the Goodnight Walk, I would really encourage you to do it. Walks like these are tiring but so, so rewarding and you can do them with family, friends and even bring along your dog for this one!
The Goodnight Walk is taking place in Cardiff on Saturday 2nd July and Swansea on Saturday 16th July. It will be a fab night which will end with a breakfast roll and a hot drink – lurrvely!
And if you just want to come along & support the walkers, you can do that too 🙂
If you’d like to sponsor me, you can also do that here!
I’ll keep you updated on my training 😉 & I hope to see you there!
